An a good occasion to ask Holger about that replica belt he made, very similar to the Rhenen one, reconstructing the decorative stitching on the leather, which was partially preserved on the original. Where the heck is that marvelous find published?

Aitor

Yes, being a leatherworker myself, I would love to see the decorative stitching pattern on that original belt. Perhaps I could replicate it...
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

This is my Roman Soldier Impression-with a sense of humor. I made this 16" high papier mache' model when I was a junior in high school for an extra credit project for Latin class: you guessed it-on the Roman Army.

My primary source was a book (now out of print) by Flavius Vegetius Renatus called "De Re Militarii" (My Roman surname "Vegetia" was taken after this author).
I realize now that much of the uniform is not historically correct or in proportion, but what the heck-I was only 16-and my sources back then were quite limited. I just HAD to share.
So here is "Minutus", after a book by Mika Waltari called "The Roman".
Salue Vegetia, you did better when you were 16,than any recent Hollywood more aged costumes "gurus",lot of money equipped, did...
White tunic...!!
Titus

LOL-thanks for the compliment Titus
In fact, being a purist, I really get aggravated with Hollywood!
A question:Is the white tunica in fact correct for a miles? I always thought that red was reserved for the higher ranks, or even the Praetorian Guard, which is why I used white.

I think tunica color is one of those subjects that everyone has an opinion on but no one knows for certain. From what I've gather during my time here, it's one of those subjects to avoid
Apparently a heated debate can ensue afterwards
Hi Ivan,

That looks great! Nice tunic you have, and do I see some alterations to a Deepeeka helmet?
Only the shield seems too small, and is that boss deep enough for your hand?

Any pictures of the rest of the group yet?

Valerius/Robert

Yes, the helmet is a deepeeka one, it took just few hours to fix it. The brass boss is big enough so my hand is quite free inside. Could it be the size of a cavalryman or standart bearer shield?

Ivan FAVENTIANVS

Yes, a cavalry shield would likely be smaller.

Well, now I just the need the horse....

Edited by: FAVENTIANVS at: 9/28/04 7:49 pm

Ivan,
Good job! That looks very nice!
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

Nice choice of fabric and trim on the tunica-and you look very handsome. I really like the color also-a nice departure from commercially available tunics (EEEEEK!) that are colored an unnatural red that can only be produced chemically. Interesting that in Italy, (and perhaps many other parts of Europe) leg wrappings were used for centuries afterwards by shepherds.
