Mike, I hope you get the chance to try a distance march in full kit. We were lucky that we were able to march across a Roman landscape, seeing turrets, walls, following Roman roads, which makes it special. But just being out in the countryside with a spear, shield and a kit bag full of rations is fantastic.
Hi Mike,

Thank you for your kind words once again. We do a Wall Walk each September and you and yours would be welcome to come. Or if you prefer we would host you at an event.

There is a philosophy behind the walks that we do. All re-enactors entertain, and some educate. And put simply if you claim to educate you must lay some claim to accuracy. You can accurately re-create crafts and skills from the past, given time, dedication and often money. And with some research you can recreate clothing and personal equipment that challenges Hollywood myths and clichés. We are not trying to recreate costumes, but well made clothes for outdoor life. We have to choose the best materials we can get, ensure we get the cut right and that we can walk, run and fight in them, day and night, rain and shine.

When you think your clothing and kit is realistic, you may wish to test it, to see how well it lives up to the claims of accuracy and authenticity. One way of testing your work, and yourself, is by putting it in realistic situations. Which means marching, scouting, camping and generally having a good time!

We are not trying to be soldiers, just test our clothing and equipment. Worth doing either side of the pond.
