HELMETS DATABASE, UPDATE & REQUEST
#16
Jasper,

e-mail sent.

Jim:
yes, if it has eyebrows then it is one of the gallic series but I'm not convinced that the "thing" seen on this picture http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/ ... getio4.jpg
is actually trace of an eyebrow. For me it seemed more likely that there is only some metal object corroded to the surface of the helmet just like seen on this picture (on the right-back part of the bowl) http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/ ... getio6.jpg
instead of being part of the helmet itself. Otherwise this helmet is very similar to the Italic G without the crescents IMHO.

But this is only my hypothesis and I can be wrong.

József, I fully agree about the absence of eyebrows in that photo, but I'll always bear in mind what Heiko, Peronis and I went through trying to figure out where they were on the Krefeld helmet from the photos we had. Never say never with eyebrows Big Grin We must have thrown a dozen drawovers at each other just on that, and none of us got the same outline.

As for it being like an Italic G I don't really agree with that  The bowl is a very different shape altogether, the Italic G being actually very rounded. We often think of the modern repros, but they don't reflect the profile of the actual Hebron helmet IMHO. Here's what I mean, from months back for the Deepeeka discussion:

As you can see, I think Jyrki would hate the Hebron helmet, but he'd love the one you posted here  I think your's is the squarest Roman helmet I've ever seen.

It's a very interesting one I must say. Made for Frankenstein?

Hm, maybe you are right, Jim.

I have just been to Edinburgh and took pictures of their 3 cavalry helmets. Nice, very nice indeed..... Smile

Will post them on www.romancoins.info and as for the other images Jasper can use them for the helmet database.

And my day at the Hadrian#s wall was just fantastic

I've tried to access romancoins.info twice today and both times the server was down. Everything okay?

Hey Jimbo- the helmet in figure A has rings on the sides, yes? That makes it a Centurio's helmet, doesn't it?

www.romancoins.info worked fine when I accessed it, incl this morning.

The server is quite reliable, we have a good 1200 visitors a day.

Tarbi, did you accidentally used the link posted above? It had a superfluous comma.

I did Jasper, but I both typed it in and used a Google link (in case I mistyped it) earlier in the day. The server was definitely down and non-existent as the link above now works for me.
