Arqueologists from Jaen University located some years ago the Baecula battlefield in a hill over the Guadalquivir river near the village of Turruñuelos, in Jaen province, Andalusia. Today have been released to the press that they have recovered so far some 1.304 pieces from the site related to the battle, including arrowheads, darts, pilum and javelin points, sling bullets, coins, brooches and rings. They claimn to have reconstructed the events of the battle following the little sandal(caligae)nails scattered over the fields and located with the aid of metal detectors.

I've lost about 2-3 nails from stepping on tree roots.

A view of the hill from the south. According to the battle's reconstruction shown in the newspaper El País, the romans took this route to approach the carthaginian fortified camp which stood on top in the background. The romans first deployed their velites and sent them forwards, then the heavy infantry followed in three columns manoeuvering to envelop from three sides the enemy position.The river Betis (now Guadalquivir) flows behind the image at the feet of the hill (known as the Cerro de las Albahacas)
Scipio could see their deployment from this same viewpoint, provided that the identification of the battlefield as the one of Baecula proves correct, as there is some controversy over this subject at academic level.
