Centurion shield or Scutum
#16
Quote:This would be Legio II Aug in England (just checking).

Yes I believe so. It's the design with the 'S' shapes in each corner.

Another design to look at is the one on the grave stele of Caius Castricius Victor..

Before you buy anything from anywhere, check it against pictures and reports of actual objects first.

A number of the items on the Armillum site are old items by Deepeeka and others, some of which have been improved recently thanks to Peronis's hard effort. These improved versions do not seem to be present amongst what I saw on the site. In particular, I would recommend avoiding any of the pugiones. Three of them are the old Deepeeka ones which have now thankfully been improved and/or replaced by more accurate versions, and the fourth is the notorious Paul Chen / Hanwei impression of the Oberammergau pugio. The same applies to the 'Roman' swords, all of which feature scabbards with incorrect curving chapes and/or incorrect suspension systems.
The prices being charged for these objects are extremely high for things which are all unacceptable for use by serious re-enactors.

Just recieved my Republican scutum from Jorge at Armillum! Was a little worried when I saw the box size, but actually it is a good size and weight! Big Grin

And nicely painted! Big Grin )

Yes, and is it lenticular or made of plywood?

He says it is made in traditional style, as in strips of wood, and the nails holding on the bossare definately hand forged,as is the boss, I think! Big Grin

Could be canvas or fabric! not 100% sure on that one. can make out some sort of weave pattern under the paint!

I believe the scutum from Fayum was covered with felt.

Actually I was not aware of that Crispus! I thought only the dried out timber had survived!

The Fayum shield is missing, as I understand it. I find felt a curious thing to use on a shield, but I recently learned that ancient felt was not like felt produced today. It was supposed to have contained more air in it. Without the Fayum shield to examine, we can't really get a better idea.
