Was my first thought, too, but I now think it rather is a speck of plaster, just like that surrounding the picture :-P P

Aha! Well spotted, it definitely is Smile

Hmmmm, thought it was a scene depicting a roman divorce!

Hold on, is he wearing a red tunic? Is that a tattoo on his upper arm?

Wow! Terrific work!

I agree it appears to be more like a wallet

could also be a pouch for transporting documents, like a [manila] envelope

Hi all,

since I'm going to make a (small) number of the bag/wallet below during the winter months and thought I'd ask if anyone wants to have one made as well. Price would be 28.- euros, veg and alumn tanned leather, red leather parts dyed with madder, size and colouring as the original (if interested please drop me a PM). To quote myself from the start of this thread:

Quote:No. 1 of the three pouches found in the Cave of letters in the 1960s by Y. Yadin. Interstingly it does not have any means of closing it fast, nor any kind of handle or carrying strap. Coloring (except for the sewing thread of which there is no mentioning in the text) follows the original find, i.e. red drop-shaped application on front and red sidewalls with brown body. Reference for this is Yadin, Yigael. The Finds from the Bar Kokhba Period in the Cave of Letters. Jerusalem, Israel Exploration Society, 1963.

Quote:Seems like a rather useless design. No fastner, no handle. Nice reconstruction though Martin.

Design is identical to a '50s-era American woman's clutch purse (that's the real name of this design). Picture the 2nd century equivalent of Audrey Hepburn holding it in the Odeon hit, "Breakfast at Typhon's."

Martin,

The one and only reason why I won't be buying one of your very well made pouches is that, inspired by your work, I made one myself, although I used a darker leather for the ends and edging. Not as good as yours of course but I am still quite happy with it, even though I didn't manage to get the shape quite right. Considering mine took me about four hours to make, I think your price is very reasonable indeed.

Yes, most of the time make sure you get the excavation reports, if you know leather finds are found, most of the time they are drawn in there. For this one, let's quote Martins first post:

Yes, typically the find reports. Good (university/state) libraries usually have them. The problem, I think, rather is how to get to know that something of that kind has been found some time in the past and where ...
