Show your roman belts?

@ Barry.. You can buy dyed-thru veg tanned leather from Le Prevo and from Keith Lyons in Northampton.

@ Paul.. I think that would work.

Gorgeous stitching Ade. Does this design come from someplace in particular? Is there evidence for this kind of belt decoration in the artistic or archaeological record?

Either way I'm still envious. Somebody has mentioned before that there should be a green-blushing emoticon for just these occasions.

Hi Franklin,

It's speculative for the later period, but the stitching is based upon the patterns that were stitched into a third century baldric IIRC from Vimose(?) If it was used in that period I think it is reasonable to speculate that it would have also been used later too.

Can anyone tell me why, (while many of you can) I cannot see the Adrian belts pics? Sad

Peronis,

I must say - you have done a very nice job on that belt!

One of these days I need to upgrade my early fourth century belt to a similar standard.

Only one thing though. I had been led to believe that the small plate you used the attach the thin strap was a second century AD plate. Can you advice further?

Yes it is! it's Antonine period. Nodge confirmed this earlier. Something that was passed down in the family!

Open plate belts dated at 280+ were also found at Richborough and in Spain (see JRMES vol 10, Fourth Century Roman belt fittings from Richborough, Malcolm Lyne and Late Roman Belts in Hispania by Joachim Fernandez. Some of the designs (especially from Spain) were very new to me- would look great reproduced....... ..

Hi,

Does someone can give me information on late republican cingulum ?

I have not find pictures of original pieces : plates, buckles ?

Is there any archeological find related to Cesar's time cingulum ?

Thanks for your help.
