My own late roman belt, quite simple, inspired from the Dorchester finds with Quiet Press buckle and strap end (which I may change in the future):

"O niurt Ambrois ri Frangc ocus Brethan Letha."
"By the strenght of Ambrosius, king of the Franks and the Armorican Bretons."

Excellent belt,Peronis! Could you post another pic of the left hand side of the belt to show how you've attached the thinner strap? (And I wish I could stitch leather like that- more practise needed.... )

Yes Frater!

I used another late period belt plate to attach the belt strap. I'll photograph it when I get home for you.

Thankyou Robert! That is praise indeed hearing that from you!

@ Caballo..

Here's the left side as promised.. I used up a scrap of red leather for the strap. It's stitched to the main belt and then the stitching was covered by the riveted-on small plate. (The heart shape is just to fill a blank space!)

Ade,

Do you buy the leather already coloured or dye it yourself? So far I have been sticking with natural veg tan leather and relying upon neastfoot oil to add some colour.

Thanks, frater Peroni!

I was thinking of using the narrower Dorchester strips rivetted on to hold the thinner strap- would you recommend stitching as well as rivetting?

Also, I've lined my the back of red leather belt (100mm wide) with goatskin.

I am thinking of overlapping the goatskin over the top of the red leather, stitching, and then using the longer Dorchester belt strips as both stiffeners and as an integral part of the belt construction- ie a rivet through the overlapping goatskin at both top and bottom (as well as the middle rivet) to further hold the leather together. Hope that makes sense...your thoughts?

Cheers

Caballo
