What substitute materials do you use when reproducing Roman gear and why? .... why not a more authentic materials?.... cost, skills, availability???

I plan on making a reconstruction of the Vindolanda tent using pyrotone as described by Florentius:

This substitutes for goat skin at a fraction of the cost (cow leather isn't really correct either). Painted a suitable color, from a distance at least, it looks like leather. Also to save time, the tent seams will be machine stitched:
