Late Roman army

Valerivs,

That's a snazzy little T-shirt there. Does it say an ARMY of one on the back? Smile

Rob,

LOL!

Maybe I can cajole Theo to the Dark Side. I should just make some more shields and begin a recruiting drive. Wink

Good news for me a friend is going to start working on a Draco for me in May.

Hi Dave,
Good for you.
Have you heard anything from Secunda Britannia in the past six months?
They both seem to have dropped from the face of the earth... Cry

Rob,

From an email I got from Theo I understand that Jeff is on military deployment which explains why he seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.

I plan to make a baldric for my sword when I get back and a belt as I am not happy with the depeeka one I have.

Well Kavalarios was in Heraklious army.
Herakios is the one credired of indroducing step-nomad fashions to the army after finding it in a wreched state after the reign of Fokas.
Kind regards

Well, actually he is similarly dressed as the cavalryman in the Osprey book, who is said to have fought in the Justinian wars, a 100 years before Heraklios. But why not 7th century, I guess not much changed for steppe cavalry.

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon

Cristina, these lads are late roman early byzantine period.
They were subsidised and equiped probably by the imperial works in Adrianopolis. The armor design is step-like but probably made by the byzantine armorers.
Kind regards

Hello!

I would like to refer to the links Faventianus set in here on the 17 march.

The first helmet is the one from Augsburg, isn't it?
But where is the second one from?
Is it right that some say it is an infantry-helmet with cavalry-cheak-protections?

Thank you for your answers!

Yes, the 1st is from Augsburg. The 2nd is the Iatrus helmet.

Well, at least it looks like that...
