The horseman is meant to represent a Belisarios voukkelarios.
The footman an elite infantryman of Narsis in Italy
We were not sure about the emblem of Velisarios catafracts-probably the caltrop but we had no references.
Kind regards

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon

Great pictures. First class artist!

However, some remarks.
The buccelarius is wearing a Der el Medinah helmet which would be a rather old-fashioned type for the mid-6th century.
The first infantryman is only armed with a short lance and a semi-spatha?
The shield of the second infantryman is a bit large.. Also a lance which is a bit short.

Good picture – captures the din of battle!

However, that infantry unit should rightly be beaten because they are either not properly drilled or not following orders.
Where’s the fulcum they should execute? Why aren’t they stabbing the cavalry? The front rank should be kneeling, the second row should cover them, the third row should defend them overhead! Instead, each hides behind his won scutum and allows the cataphracts to charge right into them…

One cataphract seems to be wearing a mail coif, a spangenhelm and a face mask! Interesting combination….

They've been surprised and outflanked by the cavalry.

The 1st cavalryman wears a 4 (instead of 6) spangen Der-el-Medineh helmet.

A Berkasovo-type helmet like the Burgh Castle that Faventianus is wearing.

Robert when we researched we did not have the benefit of good advice at that time. So we did the following interpretation:
Prokopios mentions that army units were in a delporable state and in "lax" situation before Belissarios reorganized them so this is what the middle figure reperesents. The spear of the 3rd figure is a parafony because of "Alexios the scissor" and other vermin who "played" with army funds and Justinian´s attitude to his troops. The helmet of the catafract must have made it to the age of Anastasios. After Dara, Theodora sent presents to Velisarios and his voukellarioi. New helemets with white crests, armor and horse armor from the workshops of Hadrianopole. I will post an image of Velissarios showing some features.
Kind regards

Stefanos,
Any information (illustrations) you have on the army of Belisarius (mainly cavalry) please share them with us! You can post them here or email me.
Please show them..!

Robert,
The Berkasovo helmet is dated around the 4th century. Seems a little late for a 6th century soldier. Did this style make it into the 6th century?

Lovely art. The third figure is wearing Byzantine chest harness isn't it? Nice detail. Big Grin
