UK residents who haven't already spotted it may like to know that the Corbridge Hoard (the 50th anniversary of its discovery was this year) is on BBC1 Countryfile at 18:20 GMT today, Sunday 26th October.

And you can now catch it on iPlayer, should you feel the wish, at 53:13 onwards (and it is followed, predictably, by some Dressing Up As A Roman).

Thanks, Mike. I'm glad to see that Sir Chris is still hale and hearty!

I suspect you're unlikely ever to see it, but from the point of culture shock, that's probably just as well! A one-hour prime-time TV programme about farming, with a 15-minute feature on milk prices (and it is a disgrace, no doubt, putting farmers out of business) compared to a couple of minutes on the Hoard, and close-ups of the hindquarters of a Gloucester Old Spot boar, along with volunteers encouraging the spread of wild chives, could make you see us in a very different light ;-)

A mere slip of a lad, Brian. I first watched it (in 1986/7) with Brian Dobson, who is featured in it standing on the trench side, and who was a) a bit annoyed that the thing took all his best staff away from where he was digging and b) mildly embarrassed by a sequence (not in the version EH have used) where part of the armour slid majestically off the top of the chest! I had to hoof it over to the Poly (now Northumbria Uni) to get a suitable projector as the Newcastle Uni AV unit didn't have one.

Nearly forgot: those who couldn't for whatever reason see the TV programme might be interested in the upcoming book. If you think you've seen it all before, you're in for a surprise ;-)

Was not surprised to see the armour worn right ontop of the tunic.....

Will definitely order the books, but where is the best place to buy them?

Amazon in the first instance, but from next year at outlets along Hadrian's Wall and possibly from Oxbow/David Brown/Casemate too.
