"Troy" is gonna suck!

In the latest Newsweek Magazine (June 16th) one can see Brad Pitt as "Achilles" on location in Malta, attired in goofy armor that looks right out of an episode of Xena - Warrior Princess. What a shame, Wolfgang Petersen "got it right" so well in Das Boot, one would have thought some attempt, at least, would have been made for "Troy" to have historically accurate armor and costumes.<br>

Saw the pic. I thought it looked like something from "Flash Gordon" circa 1939, sort of Greek Deco. Looks like they're going for the fantasy look. <p></p><i></i>

but what would be "authentic" in this case? The armory during the period around 1200 or 800 - the time of Homer - or the archaic and classical ages, where most of the illustrations on vases come from? After all the story is a mixture of real historical events and mythology.... (at least if you compare it to the plot forthe Alexander-movies).<br>

Actually we know a great deal more about that period since the making of "Helen of Troy". We now know that the legend of Achilles being invulnerable every place but his heel, may be attributed to his wearing a full body armor like the near-contemporary Dendra Panalopy. Homer mentions boars tusks helmets, and archaeology has proven them as well for the period.<br>

Too bad nobody sent Wolfgang a copy of Connolly's, Legend of Odysseus. I tried actually, but big Hollywood people are totally insulated from we common rabble it is near impossible to contact them.<br>
<br>
Ironically, I am now working with Deepeeka on a number of authentic Trojan war items, but they will be so different from the 'trash' in this film, the effort will be nearly pointless.<br>

I don't think the audience (a part from a few) would really like to see this rather authentic armor in a movie (just like nobody wants to see Montefortino-helmets, too). <p></p><i></i>

Why wouldn't want the public see authentic stuff? I think the correct Dendra armour looks quite SF....and is as fotogenic as the Xena stuff anyway. And in Gladiator they even showed metal like armour an other more authentic details for the roman army (although they messed up with the gladiator outfits). Hollywood prooved anyway that it can learn, however slowly...<br>

I noticed the messed up gladiator outfits - they were pretty hard to miss. But I definitely missed the 'metal-like armour' on the Roman troops. To me it looked like brown- plastic-trying-to-look-like-leather-segmentata. The helmets were weird, the "tactics" were non-existent, everyone wore these weird cravat thingies around their necks, the tunics had long sleeves, <em>pila</em> were used clamped under soldiers' arms, the cavalry had stirrups (and medieval chamfrons on their horses) etc etc etc.<br>

There may have been some authentic stuff in that mess, but it was swamped by the Hollywoodisms.<br>
<br>
