Simple Belt plates....
#1
I want to do an auxilliary archer. Now, I know there's new evidence as to an auxilliary's pay rate, and that they in fact didn't make all that much less than a legionary, but I'd like to do something a bit...well, more plain.

Matt's site suggests scoring some concentric circles into some sheet brass. I'll do that as a last resort....lol. (Sorry matt! HAHAHAHA). Are there any pictures of finds of plates with some REALLY simple puch work, or stamping?

And I'd also like a shrubbery...but not too big.
Magnus/Matt
I have some very simple original ones, just pieces of sheet brass with holes in each corner. Then there are the slightly fancier ones, sheet brass with silver foil folded over it. No punching, no nuthin..... these are probably more common than you think, they are just so plain, you don't see them in the books. There have been many Gladii recovered from the graves of Auxilliaries, and all they found was the blade. If there was a scabbard,(and in all liklihood there was), it was completely organic, and left no trace.
Dan, where could I track down a picture of these simple plates...the ones with the holes punched out in the corners? Even a sketch would do.
Magnus/Matt
The belt-set accompanying the Velsen pugio has completely unadorned fittings (later?) plated with silver.
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what kind of holes. Circular, L shaped, square, etc. etc.
Neuralmancer sent me a scan of the Vindonissa catalogue with some plain belt plates. I'm going to use those.
Magnus/Matt
