My Roman Belt with mixed plates models.

From a long time I observing various of applications from finds of Roman belts plates. I am fascinated by their beauty and diversity. Different artists from various workshops worked in different ways and have their own characteristic styles ,leading to a great variety that we observe now.

This is part of archeology which I follow as example. This fresco “Relief of Pula” dating from A.D.clearly shows various of size and types of plates. One of the pendant is with spear-headthe .The other three are typical crescent model.Quote from "The early Imperial aprons " book from Bishop.

Once I made a VIRTUAL collection of various types of belts and cingulum. I came to the conclusion that there were Roman belts decorated with various type of applications.

On that way I recreated this model.All applications plates are different, not the same between them.Material is tinned brass.

This is my second Roman belt with mixed plates. Created after inspiring of the existing archeology. Once again I try to put various-combine and independent finds of plates.

It is logical to exist such as system of mixed plates belt. Legionaries were stationed in various of camps and castrum. Masters of applications have been different. Each workshop was producing plates with typical style. And all these are secondment Legionnaires purchased their products. Some of them because they had the money earned during their military service. Or maybe they have won some gambling money . However they are purchased such as applications plates to show their high military status. By the legionnaires cingulum-belt could be judge on the military status a Roman warrior.

Here I tried to combined the individual findings in a cingulum-belt from Cortesia Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum – Mainz, British Museum, Sisak and Tekije.

I can't see the image shack images you have linked to unfortunately, so I can't see what your belt looks like (unless it is the same belt as the one in the other thread), but I have to agree that many Roman military belts had a variety of plates on them, as is amply demonstrated by Mike Bishop's article on the apron, and to that we can also add the remains of the belt found around the Mainz type sword from Vindonissa, which had five plates, each of a different design, along with one remaining 'button and loop fastener' which would have prevented the sword from slipping sideways along the belt, and whose 'button' (along with that of its missing opposite number) would also have acted to decorate the belt.

Of course, not all belts had a variety of plates, with some, like the Velsen and Herculaneum sets all having the same design (or lack thereof in the case of the Velsen belt).
