4th Century Roman Belt
#1
Its been awhile since I have worked on any Roman projects. I have been busy with raising two little Roman emperors. The bug recently bit me to make Roman kit and to dig my stuff out of storage and see what needed to be updated.

I purchased this parts from Peroni with intent on starting a 4th/5th century Roman kit when my first son arrived. If I remember correctly, all of these pieces are from British finds. There are eight bow tie belt stiffeners and four ring mounts. The end pieces were made by myself to give the belt ends some support.

Now I have two boys and very little time to do dedicate to a new kit. So, I thought I would assemble these pieces and pass it along to someone who could use it for their impression.

The belt is made from to layers of 1mm thick naturally tanned vegetable tanned leather. The tongue is one layer of .75 mm leather. All of the stitching is done by hand with linen and cotton thread. My fingers are still aching from all of this sewing Confusedad:

Thanks, Frater! This is the first Roman piece I have made in sometime. I have plans for several other projects, namely to learn how to make some Fell boots.

I sent you a message regarding the belt.

Very nice work, Paul! An inspiration to me to start my own belt!

A very nice early to mid fourth century belt Paul! I suddenly feel that my own late Roman propellor fitted belt urgently needs to be replaced with something much nicer. It would be terribly embarrassing to be seen now with something as cheap as mine must now look when compared with something as nicely made as yours.

Were the stiffeners bought, or made from flat brass stock?

I think the stiffeners may be from Armamentaria, copied from Richborough finds?

Paul is right! The Zengövarkony stiffeners are quite similar too...
