...and now for Day II:
I love the smell of gladiatorial blood in the morning...
Now that must have hurt...
Am I not merciful?
Don't stop the cavalry:
And again, the suicidal barbarian 'volunteer'...
...followed by some horse-on-horse action hock:
...after which the infantry arrived...
...who then turtled up...
...which isn't too great an idea when facing artillery....
Meanwhile, back in the camp, Fumus, the Fectienses' new draco, was developing a bit of an addiction... hock:
Perhaps he was jealous that a Principate standardbearer gets to wear a lionskin....(photographed by Valeria / Marrit, the daughter of the Fectienses' noble and glorious Dux, Valerius/Robert)
To end the day on a cheerful note, it was time for a cremation...Centurio Marcus Mummius Falco had been found murdered behind his tent...
(Alas, no help from the Dutch Red Cross )
The dear departed's ancestors. Hmmm...probably his family hasn't been Roman for very long...
The wailing women (there were four). Rumor has it they were rather cheap, and they quickly ran off after being paid. I suppose you get what you pay for...
The mourners assembled...
Marcus Mummius Falco, on his bed of firewood...
The priests doing what priests do...
Fectio's member Iannica placing a gift on the pyre...
Setting fire to the funeral pyre:
The wailing women earning their keep, Corbvlo's Tiberivs is about to pay them for their services:
The pyre is starting to burn nicely...
Marcus Mummius Falco's skull has cracked, his soul has gone to the afterlife...
...and all that will remain are ashes and dust...
Praise Ivpiter Optimvs Maximvs!
