Ribchester Roman Festival 10/11 July 2010
#1
Ribchester celebrates its annual invasion by the legions on the 10th and 11th July 2010

Legio II Augusta and Comitatus will be once again supporting the festival. Comitatus will be bring five horses to the smallest arena of our season  We will be doing an early to mid Imperial cavalry sports display, and our standard late Roman show.

This is apparently the largest (only?) Roman Festival in Lancashire. Perhaps the constant rain and gloom has something to do with this? Big Grin

Every year at Ribchester we do something different. In the past we have done late 1st century cavalry, and last year it was Roman cavalry through the ages. This year it is cavalry sports. It allows me to get into 3rd century kit, hooray, a period for which we have very very good archaeological evidence backed up by excellent iconographic evidence. The others are doing the 1/2nd century. I have given up trying to wear a tube and yoke with various 3rd century helmets with deep neck guards. It would have looked good, but it is some sort of scale for me. But Hal has had various bits of metal attached to him, even wool ribbons and bells.

Would 1/2nd cent Imperial Roman cavalry have still worn tube and yoke?
I was thinking mail or scale. You get the ring-mail with the cape doublers.
Scale wit hthe face mask helmet would be cool though.....

But the rain I won't envy you.

The kit is very theatrical and looks back to a classical past. It is costume. But scales is better!

As for the rain, it always rains on the Saturday, and that makes the evening around the camp fire under the awning very special. Sunday will be nice.

Well the weather was great, there was a fantastic turnout and we managed to cram in two infantry shows, a cavalry sports show and a late roman cavalry show in each day!
Here's a couple of shots:

Looking good indeed! Too bad really that they put Legio II Augusta prominently in the title. Nothing against LegIIAvg of course, very nice chaps, but the cav are Comitatus - credit where credit's due.
