Roman festival Nijmegen 2010
#1
June 19 and 20, the Kops Plateau in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) will be the site of a Roman festival again. This time no Wall reconstruction, but I think the programm is nice again. This year, the national 'weekeinde van de archeologie' (archaeology days) will also take place at the same time. So, there will also be some nice displays on modern archeology and other periods.

Here some of the groups that will show Roman life during the festival.
* Corbulo (Netherlands)
* Gemina Project (Netherlands)
* Fectio (Netherlands)
* Roman Military Research Society (UK; the Batavian will come home!)
* Familia gladiatoria Pannonica (Hungaria)
* Time Trotter (Germany)
* Legio X equistris (Belgium)
* Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis (Belgium)
* Legio XV Primigenia (Germany)

The programm will show gladiator fights, military displays, including Cavalry and artillery, craftsman and a big market.

My goodness, just a couple of weeks to go. Where do I find the time to construct all the bits and bobs for our new Domus project?! I'm almost done with the walls and furnace for the kitchen and the scroll cabinet for the Officium only needs its hinges and doors attached. The marble cilinder capping the shaft to the impluvium needs some dressing and then its the impluvium itself Big Grin wink:

Aaaah, isn't it just saweeetah! What a joy to be privileged to construct such a thing with the help of so many friends Big Grin lol:

Gradually wé're staring to see that civilian reconstructions simply MUST be shown in their original context. Anything else just doesn't do it anymore, it merely confuses the public into thinking the Romans were a Nomadic people living in tents. A bit like Battlestar Calagtica; 'a rag tag fugutive fleet...'well you get it don't ya?!

A lot of the people in the canabae were most likely living in tents and wagons :wink:

Quote:As soon as the rain stops I'll go outside again, lay out the impluvium and capping cilinder just so I can make a nice photo. You'lll all recognise it but I'm so glad it's about to materialise :lol:

It seems the weather is going to be nice, the site is looking good and I think it is going to be a nice event.

Yes, but in almost all kitchens in Pompeii we find a latrine next to the cooking place.
