Egad! In the UK it's worse! That's hard to imagine. We spent hours in committee debating whether we were going to allow materials shot from books or taken from the web put into the database. The solution was a firewall to all non-temple students, which is rubbish, since half the students here are non-matriculated students who don't get Student ID's and off-campus internet access that put them at a huge disadvantage.
So finally we just said, "eff'em" and we posted it on our own websites and made sure all or the database images were clearly labeled. This is essentially what I did for the musculata site.
This is why I everything I post that is mine is free to use, take or publish.
FYI - for architecture, for some dumb reason, the rules aren't as strict (except in Belgium where my prof actually got an angry letter for posting an image of the Horta House, that he shot himself from the street!)
He is currently try to create a compendium of world architecture.
