This one could have served in Aurelian's armies, I think...
The design on the shield is entirely my own creation.. Sort of IIIrd century style..
...And I got the size right!! Just when I was about to shoot my scanner..

Nice work Antonius! Great detail...you do a superb job on showing maille.

Did you use a spray finish on it so the lead won't smudge? Or was that ink or paint?
Magnus/Matt
Is the armor meant to maille or is it squamata?

The coif is mail and the cuirass is scales --small scales...
I used a pencil and then a bit of photoshop for some highlights on the belt and baldric.
And thanks for reminding me, I forgot to spray the thing with fixative..

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 6/4/04 7:01 am

Good Antoninus! You are our Angus Mc Bride! What about a gallery of sketches? To store them in a firm thread and modify them anytime there are some equipment details news (as in the recent Dura findings book ...)... And maybe color sketches, and maybe...

Sorry, enthusiasm...

Vale,
Titus

Oh yes, yes!
Brilliant Antoninus, a very fine example of a 3rd-c. infantryman. Nice ring buckle, typical 3rd-c. as well as the baldric.
Only the spear could have been somewhat longer, these go up to 2.70 m I think.
Nice painting on the scutum...
I must say this rivals with sketches I have from Graham Sumner!

Valete,
Valerius/Robert

Eeerr, sorry to interrupt the festivities but...
How does that fellow bend his elbows?

Aitor

Aitor, the usual pedant...
That fellow is clearly a short sized one, and if one is 1,50 mt. tall, the elbow bends so...
Do you remember the Mc Brides' warriors? They look all like gross Neanderthal men..., why don't you tell him it?
After all the Antoninus sketch is a sketch not a painting for Osprey, even if some of them, like the the Richard Hook's color plates of the "Armies of the Carthaginian Wars", are really bad in my opinion (that guy has some problem with hands and faces). Moreover the sketch is focused on the equipment and remember too that he is not a pro...

Vale,
Titus

, very nice indeed Antoninus!.

Do you have more?
-------------------------------------------------------
Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings -- they did it by killing all those who opposed them.
Very nice drawing. My compliments.
Where do you imagine him? On what front? Northern?
By the way. What was a coif for? Integrate the helmet on the neck and throat? I imagine there was a helmet under the hood!
Elbows??
Well he bends them... at the elbow.. Probably using his biceps muscles, like you do to bend your elbow.
You don't mean the shoulder do you?
Thanks all for the compliments. There maybe more but since indeed I am not a professional I can only do it when I'm inspired and that is not very often. Besides it takes me some time to do this, again, contrary to a pro.
About the figure. He looks a tad short but they all do, due to the cuirass. It's obviously inspired by the Dura and other frescoes and paintings depicting hooded soldiers. I copied the hood from a men at arms series by McBride (Rome's enemies, the desert frontier).

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 6/4/04 12:21 pm

And I was talking about equipment!
The sleeves seem (maybe only seem to do that...) to surpass the elbows and sleeves made of scales are not particularly flexible. That was all...
This post has been removed by the author. I do not see a point to being on a forum where moderators such as Matt Lanteigne aka Magnus can practice harassment and hypocritical behavior. RAT seems to have slipped into a place where people of this ilk can do or say whatever they want AND since he's a moderator, I guess it's all okay w/ the forum owners. Good luck, but I am done here.
