A lot of sellers are selling the book already through Amazon, but for some reason Amazon doesn't seem to stock the book. They don't even have a pre-order option available anymore. Maybe they won't sell it?
Amazon are telling me the 18th September, but it arrived in some bookshops today.
... and the publishers told me (yesterday) that it will be released in early October!!!

Theo
Amazon UK have just sent me an email saying that it was despatched to me today! Big Grin D

They've just sent me one too! Good news.

Anthony had it in his bookshop last Thursday.
Spare a copy for a poor Colonial, brother?
WUT?!?! Amazon didn't send me anything and I had this preordered for ages! :x

Oh well, I ordered from one of the Amazon sellers; same price so no problemo, will probably be here next week
Anyone can post first impressions? I'm eagerly waiting for my copy to arrive Big Grin

Many thanks Graham- really appreciated!

First impression- astonishingly good value-vast number of illustrations. What really suprised me was the number of new (to me) sculptures/ finds etc- they have clearly travelled to every remote spot with Roman military remains. Some of the text is controversial and challenging (and for that reason, welcome).

But not to buy this book would be a big mistake for anyone interested in the Roman Army- there is just so much in it.

More when I've read and digested it- which could be some time. There is a vast amount- and this is just the first volume! Recommended highly.

Cheers

Mine arrived this morning too!

Really only skimmed through at the moment but looks very in-depth with a great deal of quality illustrations and photographs of equipment, sculptural references etc.

Lot's of new finds too!

Quality hardback printed on quality weight paper
Thanks for the first impressions, guys! I'll be eargerly awaiting my copy to arrive (next week I hope!)
You're welcome. About a third of the way through- keep coming across pictures of stuff I didn't know existed- some of which is no longer even accessible in museums. Plus literary references that I likewise didn't know about. And Graham's pictures are great.

Personally, and as a complete amateur, I don't always agree with some of the conclusions in the text (e.g. you'll all enjoy the leather lorica section) , but it is comprehensively footnoted and sourced so the reader can make his or her own mind up.

Huge amounts of scholarship and work have gone into this. A must have.
