Well spotted Gorgon. The painting showing Pullo and Vorenus was originally for Ross Cowan's article on the real characters in Ancient Warfare magazine but also to tie in with the second series of 'Rome'. While keeping their appearance as accurate as possible I tried to make the faces look a little like the actors in the series. I must have failed as so far only Gorgon has remarked on the likeness. As pointed out, in the series Pullo was and remained a legionary while in real life he was a centurion.

Nah, you didn't fail, Mr Graham. I'm sure it's just that a lot of people haven't yet received their copies or didn't have the time to peruse through them with more attention. The likeness is unmissable.
And by the way, kuddos for such an excelent work. A book such as this was badly needed.
Now, I don't want to press you on this, but it is after all the book that originated this thread: do you have any idea when will "Arms and Armor of the Imperial Roman Soldier" be available?

I may have to take you up on that. For both of the books mentioned before (in my confusion post) they're both still not yet released on Amazon (on U.S. and U.K. sites). The Arms and Armour book I can't even order as it isn't properly listed (says you can be e-mailed when it is available). The Military Dress book I pre-ordered a while back and am still waiting to see the listing change. My order is still on hold.
So... I'll give it a couple days to see if they change the status, otherwise I'll likely have to go through you.

I've just checked. Yes, it is available at Amazon UK but not in the US. Dunno why. The 2008 release is a mistake. Probably some early estimated release date that Amazon forgot to correct. Maybe you should order from the UK.

It happens often that the release in the USA is somewhat later then the release date at the (European) country where the book is published, so I would say just be patient. Anyway, it will surely be worth the wait! (Still haven't received my copy, also)

The various Amazon sites seem to be independent, T.J. I recently tried to order a book from Amazon.de (Germany), but was told that I do not live in their shipping area, so I should try Amazon.co.uk (UK), but -- here's the kicker -- UK Amazon didn't have the book, because it's written in German. :roll:

I'm pretty sure everyone noticed, Graham! The Pullo character (Ray Stevenson?) was particularly recognisable.

That's a bit of a rum excuse when we're all in the EU together! I had to order the DVD of
Der Rote Baron from amazon.de as it was impossible to get it in this country (a German film made in English with mostly German actors then dubbed back into German...!) and there was no problem in my getting it (although, come to think of it, it may have been from a merchant, not amazon.de themselves). Nevertheless, I'm fairly certain Coulston gets stuff from there all the time and he's even further north than you.
Amazon.co.uk do have some German language stuff, just not the range of the German site.

Yes, I really find it strange that Amazon.de woudn't ship to the UK. Doesn't make much sense, I'm pretty sure I've ordered stuff from there to Finland and/or Portugal before. You can always try the third party sellers at Amazon.de. Those usually don't have any problems to ship anywhere as long as they say "international shipping available". In fact I now tend to order from Amazon UK through the third parties because that way I don't pay VAT. In fact I just ordered "Besieged", an omnibus hardcover edition of 4 "regular" Osprey books by Mr Campbell, new, for something like 10 euros including shipping from a third party seller. :lol:

Enjoy! Just for the record, I didn't like the idea of simply bundling 4 Ospreys together (bit of a raw deal for the reader, imho), so I partially rewrote the 2 Elite volumes --
Ancient Siege Warfare and
Siege Warfare in the Roman World -- with a new introductory chapter on Assyrian siege warfare, and interspersed material chiefly from
Greek and Roman Siege Machinery -- from memory, there is very little from
Greek and Roman Artillery, so you'll just have to buy that one, too!
It seems that they don't order to your adress. Probably what's happening is that they MAY not have permission to sell some particular items to foreign adresses (or in that case maybe just the UK) due to copy rights or something. I would advise you to check out the third party sellers at Amazon.de, those usually don't care as long as they get paid. :lol:
