How can a man look at Lucy Lawless, and think of history?

Ironhand, I think the only redeeming feature of this series is Keith Allen as the sheriff of Nottingham- he is brilliant. Twisted, evil, smarmy yet downright funny.

The original series starring Michael Praed as Robin was the only decent one.

At least the characters weren't overtly politically correct, historically incorrect, and had their characters wearing desert boots, modern hoodies and zipped camo pants.
Plus Maid Marion is a real maiden in the original series, not a ninja kick boxing geezer-bird who practices Tai-Chi in the woods after eating a bowl of organic muesli and a wheatgrass power shake ...

....OK, I lied about the muesli and power shake, but not the rest

Hello Joanne
Ahem.......Showing my age here but you can hardly call Michael Praed as being in the original series of Robin Hood.

Otherwise your observations are quite correct, the new series of Robin Hood was little better than a pantomime version and I would include the Sheriff in this too...boo hiss!

Ah, this thread brings back the misspent days of my boyhood. Back in the '50s we had a British-made series called "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Richard Greene (or maybe richard Todd, I always get them confused). In the intro a guy fired an arrow that made more noise than a heavy machine gun. There were a bunch of good Brit-made adventure series on American tv back then, including "The Adventures of Sir Lancelot" and my personal favorite, "The Buccaneers," starring a very young Robert Shaw. Ah, them was the days!

No, you're right. When I see Lucy lawless I think of banks and babies.

Prior to 'Xena', Lucy Lawless was best known in her native New Zealand as 'Stanley's mum' in a series of television advertisements for one of the banks (I forget which one) where a baby reaches out (as babies do) and randomly pulls out brochures and the like from racks in the bank. The last brochure left in his hand in each advert was proffered to his parents, who would take it and see that it talked about the bank's solution to whichever financial problem they had been discussing throughout the advert. They would then say something like: 'Well done Stanley'.

Most people I knew did a bit of a double take when along with the tales of 200+ wonder bras per episode in the forthcoming 'Xena, Warrior Princess' we also learned that the lead was being performed by none other than Stanley's mum.

Hi John

That was Richard Greene but Richard Todd also played Robin Hood in a 1952 film version!
Did you get 'Richard the Lion-heart', played by Dermot Walsh in the U.S. back then as well? That was one of my favourites.
