Painted crest blocks

Greetings,

I've seen several wooden blocks of crests that where painted. Is there any evidence the Romans did this?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a motif?

I don't think there is any found evidence for it, but I think you'd be safe copying some of the greek styles. Or maybe a solid colour that matches your crest colour.

The crest is part of a tribune impression so greek style might indeed be good. I also like laurel wreath design I saw in a book.

Below is a Roman laurel wreath "VICT AVG" for reference.

If it helps at all, I'm working on the visor of my attic helmet now and I used vines toward the end where the circular disks are... vines might look good on a crest too.

I'm not 100% sure how I'll finish off my crest but, since I used embossed brass on the cheek guards and the visor, I'll most likely emboss the crest as well with some Roman motif instead of painting it.

For a tribune impression you might want to consider taking a crack at emobssing... the brass is only $27.00 for a 12x30" sheet online. The small embossing pens with the ball at the end are less than $20.00 for a set.

I'm painting it afterall;-). I want to be able to use my helmet for a Republican soldier impression too. It's an apulo Corinthian, not an attic type :wink:

Damn that embossing sheet really looks fun to use. I must get some, if I can find a good source here in Europe. It looks so much easier than doing it with a hammer and chisels on a pitchmounted piece of brass.
