Painted crest blocks - Marcus Mummius - 05-06-2007 Greetings, I've seen several wooden blocks of crests that where painted. Is there any evidence the Romans did this? Does anyone have a suggestion for a motif? Vale, Re: Painted crest blocks - Magnus - 05-06-2007 I don't think there is any found evidence for it, but I think you'd be safe copying some of the greek styles. Or maybe a solid colour that matches your crest colour. Re: Painted crest blocks - Marcus Mummius - 05-06-2007 The crest is part of a tribune impression so greek style might indeed be good. I also like laurel wreath design I saw in a book. Re: Painted crest blocks - AntonivsMarivsCongianocvs - 05-07-2007 Salve, Below is a Roman laurel wreath "VICT AVG" for reference. If it helps at all, I'm working on the visor of my attic helmet now and I used vines toward the end where the circular disks are... vines might look good on a crest too. I'm not 100% sure how I'll finish off my crest but, since I used embossed brass on the cheek guards and the visor, I'll most likely emboss the crest as well with some Roman motif instead of painting it. For a tribune impression you might want to consider taking a crack at emobssing... the brass is only $27.00 for a 12x30" sheet online. The small embossing pens with the ball at the end are less than $20.00 for a set. Re: Painted crest blocks - Marcus Mummius - 05-07-2007 I'm painting it afterall;-). I want to be able to use my helmet for a Republican soldier impression too. It's an apulo Corinthian, not an attic type  Damn that embossing sheet really looks fun to use. I must get some, if I can find a good source here in Europe. It looks so much easier than doing it with a hammer and chisels on a pitchmounted piece of brass. Thanks for the advice! Vale, Re: Painted crest blocks - QVINTVS ARTORIVS CORVINVS - 05-10-2007 Antonivs, Can you give me some more information on those embossing tools you have... Tried a search on ebay to no avail. Product name/ maker, place you got them etc... Very nicely done by the way Thanks, Phillip Re: Painted crest blocks - Decimus Apollonius - 05-10-2007 Nice work. Would really like to see more pics once you get farther along. It looks great. Brass is a fun metal to work with.....unless your files are too sharp Re: Painted crest blocks - AntonivsMarivsCongianocvs - 05-10-2007 Salve Quote:Can you give me some more information on those embossing tools you have... Tried a search on ebay to no avail. Nope, I have to keep it a top secret! Just kidding... it's made by K&S What I'm using is K&S .005 36 gauge brass, part number 6010. I picked mine up at Maximum Velocity, Inc. Phone: United States 623-587-9261 www.maximum-velocity.com The embossing tools (small pens with a ball at the end) I picked up at my local art supply store. I purchased three different sizes, six balls in total like this one: http://1001stamps.com/html/42/embossing-tool.html Quote:Nice work. Would really like to see more pics once you get farther along. It looks great. Brass is a fun metal to work with I've been taking many photos as my Attic Helmet project has progressed... I'll be done and post the 'how to' photos in about 2 weeks (if I stay on track!) You can see more embossing on my sword thread here: link from old RAT Jef... do please post photos of your crest when you're done! |
