Now this might be a stretch, but since we're talking about modifying parts and the noteworthy Jim introduced the link...disregard the grip/hilt on this. Replace it with a gladius hispaniensis grip of choice, and --

What do you all think? The blade isn't exactly right shaped at the tip, but still ?? It shouldn't be too much trouble to rework the point a little, am I right?

Hmmm........ Looks a smidge over 2" wide on the blade, which is good. But the blade's 22" long, so a purist might say it's 2" too short (at least 24" seems to be the shortest - please correct if there's one shorter).

Sharpen the point, get rid of the studs on the scabbard, pimp that up... good enough for me! Well spotted, thanks.

Just a question on encaustic paint? Is the stuff you get in craft shops suitable for our purposes? ie scutums and other things that might use it?

It's wax paint, so I see no reason why not.

Great Job, Edge!

It's given me a little more confidence to re-do my Deepeeka Pompeii scabbard.

I *really* love the Lapis Lazuli and Cobalt blue colors for the scabbards, for "my" scabbard I want to attempt something like Matt Amt's/Leg XX's:
http://www.larp.com/legioxx/gladius3.jpg

But with the Jeff Crean/SDK1171 type scabbard decoration (I like the simple-but-elegant approach...I'm such a New Englander)

(hope you don't mind me posting that pic, Matt)

I'm still a bit intimidated with making new brass furniture, but we'll see Big Grin

Here is my "converted" SOTW pugio scabbard dyed with the Royal Blue from Tandy Leather.

Looks good Alexander. Might I suggest though, adding another suspension loop and suspension ring (like all other Roman pugio sheaths I can think of off the top of my head the Titelberg sheath, which yours is copied from, originally had four suspension rings) and tinning the brass. The Titelberg sheath was actually made of iron not brass and the brass on yours could be disguised in this way as iron was also tinned by the Romans.

Crispvs,

I know, I know... The SOTW actually had only 2 loops and rings, and I added the third to be able to hang it properly. I will add the 4th one when I get to it... As to the tinning - I thought about it, but am afraid that the frame, which is soldered together, will come apart in the process. Besides, I never had an object of that size tinned- Edge tinned my balteus terminals for me using soldering mixture and blowtorch, but I doubt that will work for the frame. If you can suggest a relatively simple method of tinning an object like that, I will sincerely appreciate it.

I haven't done any tinning myself yet, but Peronis knows ALL about it. I would suggest sending him a PM. He has tinned a lot of his kit over the last year and I believe he knows a variety of ways to do it.
