As for the helmet, well, there's a discussion about this very topic right here that has come up recently:

You can also use the search function to find other threads on the topic. But there really isn't much in the way of confirmed evidence other than some sculptural references for officer's or praetorian helmets. And no, they're not made of leather. The equipment in "ROME" while better in some aspects than previous movies and tv shows on the subject, is horribly lacking in other areas.
