lol yes ok I know! Sorry Christophe, did not mean to come across as though I was having a go at you! Just still rankles that hollywood makes a comic version of a great story, when they squabble over a great version like pressfields, and it goes no-where! Are both oars in the water there? :? ? ?

No offense at all, will catch public attention on this part of history for mass people, if few have a look and interest in the "real" Sparta, perhaps won't be a waste after all

Yup...The movie is based on his graphic novel, which in turn is based on the legend of the Spartans. In terms of being accurate to the movie, yes the helmet it accurate. Some of the helmets seen in the orginal novel are thankfully closer, somewhat, and if anything in "feel" to the classic Hoplite helmet.
I'm eager to see 300, I think it looks good to the novel itself, I'm going into it knowing ahead of time that it's not going to be accurate to the history....This is a MUCH better approach than say, "King Arthur" or "Troy", but you can read about our gripes and anger of those movies in the other threads!
And I agree that if anything, like "Gladiator" and HBO's ROME, it will hopefully draw interest, and those who want to find the real information and the real artifacts will find them. Those who are dissapointed that this fantasy view does not match with actual history, well, that's thier loss.
(I know after seeing Gladiator, I was a bit miffed seeing how I was "mislead" by the hoaky information, but happy to discover the *real* information was much more interesting than what was in the movie! Surely, the movie was fun, but the real stuff is better!)

Well, like I said, I was never aware of the comic book, so I only go by what I know! :? roll: Pressfields book was surely deserving being transformed to a movie! This was supposed to happen, but some people couldn't stop swinging their hand bags long enough to get on with it! No more to be said on that I fear!

'300' as a graphic novel is an exercise in visual exuberance, and it shouldn't be confused with history! Its rich array of colourful characters pushes it firmly into the realm of hokey historical continuity, but that shouldn't detract from the seriousness of the story, which makes for rattling good history and will hopefully inspire a few viewers to look into the matter further.
Pressfield's book 'Gates of Fire' is a labour of love, and I think it would be difficult to transfer it to the big screen effectively; the sheer scale of the battle and grim deterioration of the situation from last stand to charnel-house would make for depressing viewing. I still maintain that George Clooney would have made a good Leonidas, being a bit of a grizzled silver surfer. Not sure how he'd look with long braids and a shaved top lip, though....

George Clooney? hock:
I am a big fan of Frank Miller and will be eager to view the film when it is released. As with most heroic legends, time has taken a toll on fact while myth is accepted as truth. This shouldn’t discourage anyone from seeing the film.

For comparison, watch the 1960s movie "The 300 Spartans". It's typical 60s era historical drama but they all wore their gladii (gladiuses? short swords) on their left sides and drew them across their bodies which bugged me. Oh well. Good movie regardless.
