Gladi Bone Grips
#1
I remember reading once that the Romans used mainly one type of bone for the grips on gladi. Something about it being a bone in a cow that has a thicker wall, with a smaller chamber for the marrow. Is this true? If so what bone is it?

I'd think it would be one of the main leg bones Paul; the ones that support the cow's weight pretty much 24-7. I would think the bovine equivalent of the femur.

Paul,

The femur bones work well. Go to your local Pet'sMart, look for the doggie chews, and root around in the bin of dog bones. It took me about 2 minutes to find three very thick-walled bones with narrow marrow chambers that turned into nice gladius hilts.

They were about $3 each, and more than long/thick enough.

Not femur. Metapod (both metacarpus for the front legs or metatarsus for the forward legs).

Metatarsus have a round section, and if you cut the extrems you get a bone cilinder, perfect for made grips.

Metacarpus are good too, but have a more plain section.

That bone in humans are the bones of the hand. But the cows have only one finger and we have 5.

YESSSSS!

The bones usually selled for pets are metapodia, not femur or tibia.

A femur of a cow it's very big and heavy!

Good! So that's probably what I bought and was too ignorant to know it! Big Grin

I obviously failed my bovine anatomy courses in school.

Thanks guys!

I have already ransacked the bone bin at my local Petsmart, but with no luck :? all of them had very thin walls.

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.
