Scutum 9 AD
#16
As far as I understand Junkelmann "Der hölzerne Buckel kam damals allmählich in Fortfall, die hölzernen Spinaleisten wurden durch solche aus Bronze ersetzt." (M. Junkelmann, Die Legionen des Augustus, Mainz, 1986.) the wooden spinae were replaced by brass spinae. But then I know that, especially in this book, Junkelmann often simply comes up with "facts" which are not proven by archaeological evidence. He simply states "that was soandso" and brings up no sources. Good example are his speculations about Roman clothing in named book.
So I was wondering do we really have evidence for these straight brass spinae?

Hmm. Seems like there is no evidence, if noone here has ever seen any...

There was a crossover scutum, with the top and bottom cut off, but still with the spina type boss shown in John Warry's Warfare in the Classical World. Is there any evidence for this archaologically?
