Vindonissa Pics:Now with More Links
#16
Yeah, that's a bit strange isn't it? I was under the impression that Vindonissa was only militarily garrisoned until 101AD or so- of course there's nothing to say that soldiers or even just Roman weapons were just there later on- passing through or whatever...

And great stuff Paul- magna gratis

No. Plumbatae also turn up very late in civilian settlements. Of course we can't tell for sure, but my guess is that this plumbata belonged to a comitatenses (mobile field army) unit, who were billeted in towns. Or, of course, the weapon was used by the local defense force/militia.

I have been trying to do more research on the history of Vindonissa, but there doesnt seem to be much written either in English, or German. I will continue my search over the winter.

I do know that Augusta Raurica is within easy walking distance of Vindonissa for soldiers. Augst was occupied much later than Vindonissa by military, so its very plausible that it was lost by soldiers from there. Maybe it was found in a rubish heap, or being recycled?

Not quite sure what you mean, but there is:

Veröffentlichungen der Gesellschaft pro Vindonissa

which is being published for 50+ years now Big Grin

Thanks Martin! I do not know how I have missed this. Do you know if any of the publications actually discuss the history of Vindonissa? Or are they just published reports of finds from Vindonissa?
