Curving a Scutum

Hi , Can anybody tell me please What is the easiest way to curve a scutum ? I dont have a Press so is there another way ?

You can strap the two plates against a boiler or a barrel or a thick tree...

but a press is better. A press is not hard to make, all that you need is some 1/2" plywood. Cut ribs to the interior curvature and make a box to keep it all together. You can get away with only the lower half of the press and use dry wall screws to hold the birch plywood down while the glue drys. Be careful to keep the press square.

We use a metal oil drum, 2 x 2 boards, and some of those cargo straps. If you want some more info, pm me, and I'll show you some of the pics we've taken of our efforts.

A press is best, but I don't have one right now. So I use that barrel.

Crude but effective.

Salvete,
these are some photos in detail on the reconstruction of one shield from secutor and provocator. As you will see the wood to the overlapped inside and to intercrossed and glue slices. Enough to construct one base with the shape.

Ave David,
strips of birch or other wood, type faggio (fagum). the dimensions of the strips are approximately of 5cm for thickness 2mm.
