Respectable Living History
#1
Some brainstorming for the discussion at the RAT conference.
Certain things are clear, like
- Do not smoke cigarettes in front of visitors if dressed as Roman
- Do not tell visitors about things the Romans might have had, but that have not been found yet

But there sure are many other things that should be taken into account.
What do you guys have to contribute? Big Grin
Sometimes stories of experiences with visitors can also really enlighten in these questions...

On another forum there was a discussion a while ago, which lead to the idea that every "reenactor" should make a small catalogue about the equipment he / she has, with references, pictures of the originals and so on, firstly for the visitors, secondly for the organisers of events, to give them means of quality-control. Just as an idea.

Should groups visit commercial events?

Is respectable Living history compatible with entertainment? to which extent?

Is quality of Living history measurable?

Are the reenactor´s efforts realised by the audience?

Do the reenactor´s efforts change their own historical consciousness?

How accepted is Living History in the academic world, and why?

will there be an after conference publication? I still haven't gotten a replacememnt passport, so it looks like I won't be able to attend, but I would be willing to pay for copies of all papers read/presented, as well as photos. Even putting everything on a CD-ROM would be great.
