Quote:• 400: Alaric/Visigoths invade Italy, capture much of south peninsula.Ah, now that's a mistake. The year 401 is the first year of the 5th century, and the year 500 the last one. Like the year 1 is the first year of the Christian Era, and hence of the first century.
• 499: Fifth century AD ends.
Robert! Good morning here & good afternoon there.
Correct!
Glad to see you noticed & wrote!!!
I'm sure some others did or will, before reading our latest posts here.
Unlike most fellow Americans, when U.S. advertizers, local governments, and most people, I did not "party like it's 1999" and I did not celebrate the bright dawning of the new & improved  cry: 21st century & 3rd millenium in 2000!!! (no political comments...)
Why? I knew it was B.S. (bovine stuff), and as you stated, the next century/millenium (according to the "rules") would start in '01, not '00.
I also knew historians say that Dionysius Exiguus erred by between about 4 and 18 years when he calculated the Anno Domini (aka Common Era) in what became AD 525 (sixth century). If so, then we should have "partied" in the 1980s or 1990s.
From another Some folks think erroneously think that the year AD 525 would be in fifth century, because it starts with a "5"
Thank you very much for the link. I'll merge contents, cross check to verify, etc.
It's a real pleasure to work with you, as always. Best regards, +r
