i'm with the Society for Creative Anachronism. an organization w/ a questionable reputation because we 1) cover everything pre-1600 and 2) have -very- low authenticy requirements. although some of us try and take authenticity seriously, and the numbers are rising. we do full contact rattan combat both singles and melee. we have groups worldwide. one Roman group that plays with us is: http://www.romanempire.net/romepage/ . see battle footage here:

i signed up on RAT because i'm doing research for a provocator presentation to be used in SCA tournaments.

the other group i play with is non-historical and pretty much qualifies as bloodsport. we do no-holds-barred combat w/ rattan sticks (mostly based on filipino martial arts). from a training video:

i prefer fighting in a historical mode, just wish the SCA was more open regarding 'tools and targets', to allow for a more realistic fight. occasionally we do choreographed fights at demonstrations, but normally it's 'all out'.
