Re: Gladiator Videos - Pictus - 08-29-2006

i've enjoyed the videos for a few months.

would very much like to play with the group. i keep trying to get our group to allow grappling, but change is slow.

Re: Gladiator Videos - M. Demetrius - 08-29-2006

Well, grappling, when the competitors are only partly covered, and some have metal armor parts, is a good chance to get cut, stabbed, bashed and scraped, etc., and that may be why the leaders of the group are moving cautiously. If someone loses balance and falls, and the other falls, too, it can cause fairly serious injury. Go slow on that, and maybe limit to just grabbing the sword arm, and so on.

I suspect that when the fight came to that point, everything was legal for the originals, like knocking upward under the chin guard on the helmet, knees to the groin, elbows to the throat, kicks to the knees, etc. It wasn't just a game to them, it was survival once the fight began. So if it came to hand to hand, it was a pretty dirty fight, I'd bet.

We can simulate some of those things, though, without throws and leg sweeps, tripping, and toe stomping. The audience will like it, if you're performing for an audience. If you watch the ArsDimicandi videos, particularly the Provocators closely, you'll see many of the more forceful shield blows and such are not really meant to connect with the opponent. It's stage combat, along with some other moves. I don't know if everything is choreographed, but some apparently is.

Just a thought or two.

Where is your group located? We're neophytes, just starting up in Central Texas. Familia Gladiatoria Aquila sumus.

Re: Gladiator Videos - Pictus - 08-29-2006

i'm with the Society for Creative Anachronism. an organization w/ a questionable reputation because we 1) cover everything pre-1600 and 2) have -very- low authenticy requirements. although some of us try and take authenticity seriously, and the numbers are rising. we do full contact rattan combat both singles and melee. we have groups worldwide. one Roman group that plays with us is: http://www.romanempire.net/romepage/ . see battle footage here:

http://www.jubilex.com/movies/pennsic35/p35-f1.mov

i signed up on RAT because i'm doing research for a provocator presentation to be used in SCA tournaments.

the other group i play with is non-historical and pretty much qualifies as bloodsport. we do no-holds-barred combat w/ rattan sticks (mostly based on filipino martial arts). from a training video:

i prefer fighting in a historical mode, just wish the SCA was more open regarding 'tools and targets', to allow for a more realistic fight. occasionally we do choreographed fights at demonstrations, but normally it's 'all out'.

Re: Gladiator Videos - M.ilionario - 08-29-2006

Plaese excuse my ignorance but what's SCA?

Re: Gladiator Videos - Praefectusclassis - 08-29-2006

SCA = Society for Creative Anachronism

Re: Gladiator Videos - M. Demetrius - 08-29-2006

Have you watched the ArsDimicandi video clips of their gladiator bouts? They're pretty energetic, all right, but it looks to me like they do choreograph some of their moves, and some are vigorous, but telegraphed so the opponent is able to move out of the way, but the effect is dramatic to the audience.

Anyhow, they're great to watch in the fights, and I've learned some stuff from their presentations. Hats off to the Italians!

Yeah, quite obvious but that's probably done to avoid injuries....

Re: Gladiator Videos - M.ilionario - 08-29-2006

Does that hurt?
Don't you get trampled in the middle of that?
Yeah, it seems that your (large) group isn't quite concerned about historical accuracy: I saw roman shields of the 2nd century in a 13th century battle....LOL

yes, it hurts. over the last 14 years i've had: torn ACL, dislocated shoulder, separated ribs, lots of broken fingers, concussions, knockouts...

yes you get trampled, just part of the game. cover up and hope the pile doesn't get too deep.

we require an "attempt" at accuracy. some take that more seriously than others unfortunately.

but, it's the only place i can go put on armor and beat on people. and i don't have the money to joust like some of my friends.

Salvete,
is astounded that you have interpreted the combats of Ars Dimicandi like “choreographiesâ€

Re: Gladiator Videos - M. Demetrius - 08-31-2006

Vincenzo,
Pardon me for my error. I only was making an observation based on the video clips on your group's website. Some of the moves the fighters use seem to be repeated in other fights, so that's why I thought that way.

In no way was I intending to make less of your performance. It's some of the best I've ever seen on the web.

I hope someday that our group can put on as good a show as you do. You must practice incessantly to achieve the high quality that you do.

Thank you for your English. I have to rely on BabelFish for my Italian.
