Scutum cover
#16
Is this a fair take on Neuraleanus' version of the Junkelmann harness?

Where A goes into B's buckle forming a strap going across the chest and back and upper right arm.

C goes over the left shoulder.

D is the strap wrapped around the scutum's handgrip.

I really hope Neuraleanus doesn't mind me doing that to his photo. Neuraleanus, if you are out there, let me know.

though at the moment I do not see the photo.

I recently rebuilt my scutum harness. On a recent march one of the soldered brass rings broke. I replaced these with riveted brass rings made from 3/16 inch diameter wire. I also realized that it is important to have both rings at identical heights. I adjusted the strap lengths accordingly.

The recent change was to replace the rings with riveted versions and to adjust the strap lengths so that the rings are at the same height.

Just a small question Neuraleanus,

Why do you use rings in your harness? I have not found them necessary in mine and I suspect that the problems Florentius reported with his rebuilt harness may lie in his use of rings. Also, as you have pointed out, rings can break, whereas a rivetted or securely sewn leather strap is less likely to. The ends of my torso strap are sewn into loops which the main straps are passed through, meaning that they can also be adjusted.
Of course, breakable fittings weren't exactly something the Romans avoided if lorica segmentata is anything to go by, so I do not discount rings as a possibility. I am just curious to know what advantage there is in them.

I guess this may be more of an issue of me copying others like Florentius.
