A petition, perhaps?
I believe that the Queen had the right to inherit ownerless property in the Duchy of Lancaster, otherwise known as
Bona vacantia :wink: :wink: :wink: :wink:
The Duchy of Lancaster has a pretty unique position withing the UK, as does the Duchy of Cornwall, known as Palatines.
I personally doubt the Queen would get involved. However, Prince Charles may be a different matter altogether, he also being Duke of Cornwall.

Excellent. Just one thought- despite the developer's attitude, it is important that they gain some financial benefit. Otherwise the temptation when the next tombstone is discovered might be "Another archeological thing. Nothing but trouble, and will gain us nothing. Chuck it under the bulldozer before someone sees it"........  hock:

That is, unfortunately, exactly what happens in Italy (and other places as well, I suspect...). I spoke to one man in Molise who lived close to the route of a pipeline under construction. He told me that the contractors had come across a cache of amphorae, divied some up, and smashed and reburied the rest -- because government intervention would be too much of a hassle. I heard both from him and another man that farmers who find artifacts in their fields usually keep it quiet, because the government can seize the land, and financial reparations are small and slow in coming. A landowner in Puglia showed me a tomb cover that his neighbors had found and were going to smash for the same reasons, until he volunteered to keep it hidden in his house. It's a real problem.

Yeah, that's right. And if the British government is sensible, they'll buy it, just like the local town council did over here with the Houten tombstone found five years ago. It was only about 1/4th of a complete one, but the finder still walked away with 10,000 euros.

Well, just received a charming letter from Her Majesty's correspondence officer at Buckingham Palace re my letter about the Lancaster tombstone!
HM the Queen thanks me, has taken careful note of my comments, and has sent my letter to Tessa Jowell, Minister for Culture (who makes the decisions re an export licence) with a covering note.
Hopefully any export licence will not be allowed.
What a good monarch we have here in UK! I'll let you know any more developments.

Thanks all! All I did was to write a letter, but I somehow suspect that a letter with a covering note from the Queen may be taken more seriously by a minister than one from just me.....
Mind you, it shows the power of RAT; if it hadn't been originally posted here, I might have missed it; and a letter would not now be sitting in a ministerial red box- karmas all round!
