Roman Tombstone, Lancaster - Viventius - 02-09-2006

I thought this had been mentioned in another thread, but can't find it at present. However, this report is in the Times today

And here's a report with some nice pix:

Gor blimey, that developer does meet all the criteria for an obnoxious bastard who only thinks about money, doesn't he? "The archaeological guys were more excited than me. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this will hold up the development’. At the end, the proof of the pudding is how much it is worth."

Re: Roman Tombstone, Lancaster - Tarbicus - 02-09-2006

Quote:An export licence will almost certainly be required for such an important piece, as it meets all the criteria governing the export of cultural objects.

How does that work legally in light of the Getty shenanigans? Was that a completely different situation, or is there any chance it could be made to stay here in Britain?

I know of a possible (unpublished) gladius sold here in Britain to a Canadian, but he couldn't get it past Canadian Customs a couple of times and ended up returning it to the vendor.

Re: Roman Tombstone, Lancaster - Caballo - 02-09-2006

"Restoration work has begun and will include re-attaching the pieces, which is always a difficult business with large stones such as this."
Looking at the picture at http://www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk/content/N ... news90.htm there is a picture of large piece that does not include the head or top part of the stele, though a Medusa head is mentioned in the text. Is it too much to dream that there is a broken piece that shows the details of the helmet.......??

PS As for the developer's attitude......words fail me......

OT but related:

When they built the new Constitution center here in Philly, they uncovered an icehouse from the first executive residence of the United States. Turns out it is the only surviving piece of George Washington's house here. The icehouse, which he designed himself, was patterned after his in Mt. Vernon. He even wrote a letter about it, so we recognized it right away.

My prof got three weeks with it before they bulldozed it.

Consider this for a moment. Developers working for the US gov't...building a building commemorating the US Constitution...destroyed the last surviving bit of our first executive residence...DESIGNED...by the Father of our country.

ARRRRGGH!!

DEATH to DEVELOPERS!!

Sorry to answer myself but just tracked down the print edition of the UK Times, and the head and top of the gravestone survive! A very unclear (and small picture) but it certainly shows the helmet and shield. Can anyone get a clearer picture?

And I do feel sorry for the Osprey author of the newly published Roman Auxilary Cavalryman- just out when a major discovery is made......

Cheers

Thanks hansvl. I thought I'd seen it discussed earlier, but couldn't see for looking! The piece from the Times was new so I thought I'd put it up

is this tombstone already added to our database?

Re: Roman Tombstone, Lancaster - Praefectusclassis - 02-10-2006

Nope. Need good head-on piccies. Anyone got some?

Re: Roman Tombstone, Lancaster - Caballo - 02-12-2006

O.K., a seriously long shot time to try and make sure that the Lancaster gravestone stays in the country and is not carted off to sell to a private collection where none of us can examine it.

After some digging, I discovered that the Queen is also (amongst other titles), Duke of Lancaster, and as such has an serious interest in the place. So, I've written to her- something I have never done before- to ask her to intervene. Hopefully a quietly well-chosen word to the Prime Minister could result in an export licence being with held?

I'll let you know what reply I get. Worth a try, I think?

Cheers

Big Grin Who knows!

Lancaster tombstone - derek forrest - 02-12-2006

To sell it stateside would need an export licence which would be opposed tooth and Nail. Its in the custody of Stephen Bull at the Preston Museum where in fact I have seen it. There may also be some question of ownership. Personally as a Lancastrian I would do anything necessary to ensure its on public display in the county.[/img]
