Certain, Lucy! Anyware, Johnny should add his real first name to his signature, and so should do Robert, in spite of it being his Forum AKA...
Sorry folks, so are Forum rules!

Many thanks for the data, Martin and Robert! Big Grin

Many thanks, Robert, laus for you! Big Grin
BTW, you don't need to change your Forum AKA if you don't won't to do it 8) (And, anyway, I'm not sure if you can do such without having to register again... :? )

Thanks Aitor. Someone said it was possible without without losing my rating (and medal) or posts, I asked because everyone has these wonderfull ferocious Latin names and when I joined (so little time ago, seems I've trodden these fora forever, how did I get by without RAT) I couldn't think of anything fitting, as I'm VERY new to reenactment as a personal thing. Not to archery and early weapons.

Robert,

I simply call myself Crispvs because that is what most people know me as in real life. I got into Roman re-enactment very soon after coming back to England, meaning that many of my closer friends are fellow re-enactors. In the RMRS we all carry Latin names as a matter of course and most of us know each other by these.

fletchings are high on that for small game hunting, keeping it from going more than 30-40 yds with too much force, on big game hunting and war arrows the flights are lower and longer, allowing for flight in excess of 150 yds. with killing force. sinew and indian hemp fiber are bindings, the glue is the resin from the pine tree.

unfortunately i have only a webcam, so i cant really get much better pictures until i borrow a camera. sinew is used on all war arrows since it expands in the body and loosens, to make sure the removal of the arrowhead is hard. in order to shoot we actually pinch the arrow, very different from europeans, and pull it back to the face rather than the outer cheek. A picture of one of my big game arrows is coming.

Thanks again, John! Big Grin
Which fingers do you use to draw the arrow and bowstring back?
Are your bowstrings made of sinew cord?

index finger and thumb. I have several made out of rolled sinew cord, and another of the indian hemp plant. rolled sinew is stronger, but stretches more with the drawing and damp weather.

at any rate, i can make whatever style of roman arrow i think, i do like the long pointed nock. most of the arrows i can make will be a wood rather than cane, but for a price i can call an aunt in georgia and get some river cane. I can go get some white or grey goose feathers easily enough, and thats about all i need, youd have to supply the points, which you could mount yourself or send to me and i could probably mount almost any kind.
