Religion and Re-enactment
#46
Quote:I hope to be involved with a lot more successful religious events in the coming years. At the moment MITHRAS would be the one I would want to re-enact. After all he is the ONE TRUE GOD OF ALL GODS !!!!!!!!!!

And so what do the ladies worship?

I know we shouldn't get into cat-fights over dead religions, but...

I hate mithraism.

There, I've said it.

Worship Cybele, it was a popular female counter-part to the male-dominated Mithras.

How can you not love bizarre initiation rituals, religious ranks, masks and costumes, feasts as worship, an all-male environment and the glorification of endurance, loyalty, truth and honour?

Mmmm ... I can see why it was male-dominated Big Grin

The Last Legionary
This book details the lives of Late Roman legionaries garrisoned in Britain in 400AD. It covers everything from battle to rations, camp duties to clothing.

As a Christian (well, I have a chi rho on my shield ...) I hate Mithras too. I feel the burning urge to persecute the pagan members of Comitatus. I think we should re-enact that aspect the next time we're at a show

Interesting you should say that. The BBC aired the second part of Prof. Kathy Sykes' investigation into alternative medicine on Tuesday, and she came up with some surprising conclusions (or pretty convincing theory) about the relationship between ritual and the healing powers of the placebo effect.

It may well be that ritual is hardwired into our brains as being part of the physical healing process, whereby the whole expectation of being healed, be it in a hospital (which has its own heavy ritualised practices and inspires awe and expectation in many patients) or at a faith healing rally, actually stimulates areas of the brain into producing dopamine, which may be a catalyst for the body to be able to initiate controls over disease and particularly chronic pain.

Anyway, it was fascinating, and you Brits out there should catch next week's conclusion.

Darn, I missed that one!
The first part, though, proved (to her own surprise) that in the case of acupuncture, there was a real effect that was unreproducable by any placebo effect.

At Fectio, we have a natural balance when it comes to religion:
Valerius (me) pretends to be a Christain, while Chariovalda (Andreas) pretends to be a pagan.. Big Grin

I seem to be one of the very few Christians in Comitatus. If there were more, we could persecute each other, as they were prone to do back then. There's a fair few declared pagans (spit!) There's a lot of 'undeclareds' and I don't blame them  Or perhaps I should try to convert them ...

PS When I said I hate Mithras, I didn't mean you Paul!!!!

What's wrong with freemasonry? George Washington was a freemason

Furthermore, what's wrong with SOL INVICTUS MITHRAS ???

If you are not happy with sol invictus you can still support the FSM Big Grin

Hi Everyone,

Very interesting thread here. Let me say that I am not a re-enactor and I know very little about Roman religion but as I read the postings one thing crosses my mind. Are any of you folks who are Christian in your everyday lives uncomfortable with re-enacting Roman religious ceremonies? I think I would be. That is no judgement on anyone. I realize everyone is different but I am interested to hear from you folks who have an opinion.

Sorry if this is off topic. I guess anyone who wishes to respond can send a private message so as not to throw the thread off topic.

Thank you all and as always I find RAT very interesting.

Hi Sandra,
Well, should you make it to Archeon this year, you could assist me in converting the pagans.. Last year I tried to 'convert' the pagan Nehallennia temple into a shrine for Mary.. But our resident priest (Monty) did not allow it! This year I'll try to make him a bishop.

The Herculiani are also proud pagans, except for one - Vindex.

And then there is always this obtrusive throwing off the cingulum/balteon during military ceremonies. What a nuisance

Actually this is not too far off topic, but it can become controversial. I am a Christian. I do not worship other gods and goddesses, even in playing or re-enacting, and if the reenactment is having a pagan ceremony, I choose to take a potty break or find some extra duty that will keep me involved elsewhere until the ceremony is over. If a group gets bent out of shape about it, I can always find another event or group.

Yes Caius Fabius, I think I would do the same. I would not want to interfere with those who want to take part but I would discreetly make myself scarce and hope nobody takes it the wrong way.
