LoTR, Elven Falx?
#1
Remember the opening scene in LoTR as the orcs run at the lines of elven infantry, they seem to be using a long handled weapon. I found a picture of it and it reminds me a lot of a Dacian Falx, with the curvature slightly reversed.
Interesting observation, but it isn't slightly reversed, it's completely reversed. The falx strikes me as a hacking/ chopping type weapon, sort of a "great kopis" (analagous to a kopis as a great sword is to a short sword). The "elven sword" is intended to be an integral component of the circular, slashing style that the combat experts wanted for the elves. If you look more closely (I think, I could be wrong), what they're shown using in the scene you're talking about is a longer-hafted weapon, very similar to a naginata, that the LOTR-movie people call an elven "spear." The one you show is what the elven archers use in the TT Helm's deep battle. There's an interesting book about the arms and armor of the (movie version) of the LOTR, called "The Lord of the Rings Weapons and Armor," by Chris Smith, that talks about the arms and armor of the production, sort of pretending to be "archeological" in nature to some extent, if this interests you at all.
Of course, if you're a Tolkien fan, you know that this is completely unlike his description of weapons and armor (which would be much closer to early-mid Medieval times, with little or no plate mail and really no curved blades by the "good guys"). But it is kind of a fun attempt to create a distinctly "non-human" martial culture. (Much like what they do w/ dwarves.)
I know the handle should be longer, but isn't this more falx-like?
