Salve,
Does someone know where to find pictures of pompei-gladius chapes? I'm familiar with the one rom the gutmann collection but cannot find other examples.
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Marcus

Hello,
Is there any evidence for the chape on the deepeeka pompei gladius? I know the brass is way too thick, but did the form exist?

SALVE
That's the chape from Valkenburg (Belgium?). I have post a photo of a reproduction maked by me in some previos posts.
The deepeeka ones, i think it's a bad interpretation (very large) of one of the original swords found in Pompeia, that gives the name of that kind of sword.
If you want more examples, you can see the pompei swords replicas from ERMINE STREET GUARD, all matches one original.
But many swords are very simple, without decoration or only with the terminal palmettes.

There are some pictures of gladii on their site yes, but I find it very difficult to see the chapes clearly... I am reworking my deepeeka gladius and am going to make a new chape for it so I need a good example to do it correctly.
I don't know if this chape comes from Valkenburg(it's in the Netherlands, not in Belgium) , perhaps someone else knows.

Salve Lucius,
The link appears to be dead. I get a message saying the post doesn't exist any more...
Is there another way to view the photographs?
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Marcus

sorry but this Valkenburg site lies in the Netherlands near the coast....
(there is however a second Valkenburg (at the Meuse), that is more near belgium but it is still the netherlands..see a map
A similar chape with the same pattern was found in Nijmegen and is in the museum there. The Valkenburg one is in the Leiden museum
