Roman Marching Songs
#16
We have one in latin but we don't sing it in front of the Ladies
Fasta Ambrosius Longus
John

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

English translation, please?
:?

Srry, here it is:

Ik wil bij het legioen (I want to join the legion)
Rondmarcheren, heftig doen (Marching around, doing violent)
'tis misschien een beetje raar (it is maybe a bit strange)
Een jurk aan en heel kort haar (a short dress and very short hair)

Maar ik wil bij het legioen (but I want join the legion)
Lekker knokken voor wat poen (funny fighting for some money)
Geef mij maar orders, geen gezeik (give me commants, no complaints)
Ik steel en plunder voor het Rijk (I steal and plunder for the empire!)

We also sing the song Ceasars legions sang at his triumph.
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

Yes, we have also one song (about three words).. ;-) I also sing this lilt but really rarely ;-) ) Song is really popular with our veterans and also by tyrones, especially if we celebrate something (victory in battle, somebody's birthday etc.), or if we are alone in tavern ;-) ) for example in pub near our camp (on some event, festival etc.) or if we are alone in camp (no visitors are in place)...

We can not sing it also infront ladies ;-) ) Is
there anybody, who wants to know these three "mysterious" words :?: ;-) ) 8) :-) ) English translation, of course ;-) )

regards from Prague

Volo in legione
Iter facere et fortis esse
Fortasse insolitum est
In tunica et brevi cum crine

In autem legione volo
Pugnare pecuniae
Da mihi iussa, non questus
furor et diripio imperio romano

I hope it is correctTongue

THE RISING OF THE MOON By the Dubliners was are first song.(not very roman i know but we now know proper marching songs now

when i find the words of them i will put them up
"The Kaiser knows the Munsters,
by the Shamrock on their caps,
And the famous Bengal Tiger, ever ready for a scrap,
And all his big battalions, Prussian Guards and grenadiers,
Fear to face the flashing bayonets of the Munster Fusiliers."

Well, the root would be questus, masculine noun, perhaps. There are other words, but that seems right.
