I know we are talking about artists impressions but wouldn't a coupling sleeve be much longer than the ones depicted on the Ancient Warfare covers to join two long pieces of ash or cornel for stability in a heat of battle situation. I always though of them as a sort of counter balancing device depending on what phalanx rank you were positioned in or a form of handle.
