If I were to try to make a steel umbo, or have one custom-made, any idea what it would look like for the 5th century? I'd like to use this one as an inspiration for the shape because the shield is small to begin with and this umbo has a fairly compact flange that won't cover up most of the shield's face, but of course it's intended as Roman.
Alternately, is there any excuse for using a round boss on an oblong shield in the 5th century or earlier? Some Etruscan bronze work seems to show them, but anything north of the Alps?
The majority seem to be barleycorn type bosses so it would seem to fit the bill, though I would be inclined to cut at least half of the width of the flange off , you can add short or long spines " Iron age shields BM" I think it would be close enough...
