Back plate to girdle fastening---buckles in or out?
#1
Gentlemen:

Just curious as to the slight variation in location of buckles that attach the back plates to the girdle. The vast majority of reproductions have the buckles on the inside but a few have the buckles and straps on the outside. What is the evidence for the buckles and straps being on the outside?

Thanks for the knowledge.

Dr. Bishop may be able to answer this question better, but I believe that outside buckles is an Indian mistake.

Nothing is certain but the vast majority of representations including Mikes show the rear straps inside.

In all of the A models from the Corbridge hoard, the rear buckles were on the same sides as the interior leathering-- in other words, on the inside of the cuirass. On the front of the cuirass, the buckles are mounted to the front of the breastplates, meaning the front straps go on the outside.
I've looked around and have seen some Deepeeka models with the back plate buckles on the outside but on other Deepeeka models the rear buckles are inside. From the pictures it seems that the model with the rear buckles on the outside have the upper shoulder guards in the right place (which seems to be the biggest mistake on the early versions). I've also been told though that the inaccurate models also had the back plates "wrong"---what that meant was not specified.
Then again, the Corbridge A's shown at RLQM.com have the rear buckles on the outside

RE: RQLM... whoops! Looks like they have the buckles on the wrong side, at least on the one pictured. I'm not sure if they make 'em all that way, or whether this was just a one-off (maybe for someone who found the inside buckles were digging into his back, but I'm just speculating).

Matt Amt's Lorica Seg page....

www.larp.com/legioxx/lorica.html

...is pretty clear that the back buckles and straps go on the inside of the cuirass. Likewise, the Corbridge reconstruction on Mike Bishop's Lorica Segmentata website...

www.loricasegmentata.org

...shows them on the inside.

If you're in the market for a lorica seg or are looking to make one, I'd definitely look for one (or make my own) with the back straps on the inside, based on the fact that (a) all the archaeology supports it and (b) it just looks better and cleaner, IMHO.
Hold on - are we talking about the top strap (n.b., singular) joining the left upper back to the right upper back being on the outside, or the buckles joining the shoulder segments to the rib segments at the back? On my latest Deepeeka seg' the latter are internal, with only a strap and buckle for the upper large plates on the outside, almost mirroring the front straps across the upper chest/collar. If you see what I mean?

They are referring only to the four vertical fastening straps being internal. Your latest Deepeeka seg is of the correct configuration.
