Roman Army Cruelty - Sources?
#16
Do you mean individual acts of cruelty or the following of 'cruel' orders which may have been issued as a form of financial reward, intimidation, retaliation and punishment?

Some relative incidents might include :

1. the slaying of the Carthaginian prisoners after the battle of Metaurus (Polybius 11.3.3.)
2. the slaying of the Samnite prisoners after the battle of Colline Gate (Appian, Bel.Civ. 1.10.93)
3. The crucifying of Spartacus' men along the road from Capua to Rome (Appian, Bel.Civ. 1.14.120)
4. After his victory over the Maedi and the Serdi, Crassus the Younger had the hands of the prisoners cut off. (Dio, 51.25.4.)
5. The same was done by Lucius Aemilius after the subjugation of the revolted Cantabri and Astures (Dio 53.29.2.)
6. Before the second battle of Philippi, Brutus promised his men that should they gain the victory, they would be given Thessaloniki and Lacedaemon as a prize to plunder. (Plutarch, Brutus, 46.1, Appian, Bel.Civ. 4.16.118)

Would these be relevant to what you are looking for?
