On dating of the late roman helmets.
#16
What's interesting is that in Roman art, the Ear guard found on the Coblenz helmet seems to become prevelant in the 5th century on ridge helmets. Just look at the Amazonomachy Mosaic, or those Wood/Ivory Carvings from Egypt of the Quintani.

Also, the Santa Maria Maggiore Arch, which dates to 431 AD, depicts lots of Iatrus-type helmets. (Two-piece bowl with Berkasova Style Cheekpieces). A few helmets have a line indicating a continued use of quadripartite construction.

Having been a soldier, I think it very probably that in the late period that there were hybrids between styles. These hybrids may have been localized even.

Not a dwelling within sight, and the farm labourer, and curious traveller, are the only persons that ever visit the scene where once so many thousands were congregated." T.Lewin 1867
